Introduction to Stained Glass


This practical course is aimed at beginners who want to learn the basics of leaded stained glass.  Each attendee will complete a leaded stained glass panel to take home at the end of the course.

 

Course Content

· Cutting glass to fit a design,

· Fitting the glass and lead together into the design

· Soldering the lead

· Cementing the finished panel

 

There are a number of options in terms of course duration and this will determine the size of the panel that you make.  On all courses you will learn the same basic set of skills, however with the longer courses  you will have more opportunity to practice each element and spend more time perfecting your skills by producing a larger panel.

Introduction to Fused Glass - 2 Day Course

This 2-day course is a practical hands-on experience giving you the skills and knowledge to make your own work.  You will go away with lots of samples of different techniques and on the second day will have the opportunity to put together all the knowledge that you have learned to produce a larger creative piece.   No previous experience with glass is required, however if you have worked with fused glass before you will still be taught lots of new skills.

Course Content

· Overview of the fused glass process

· Types of glass for fusing

· Materials that can be incorporated into fused glass - frits, metals, coloured glass, 

· Techniques for different effects in the glass

· Use of moulds

· Firing schedules - how glass behaves in the kiln when heated and cooled

· How to obtain different effects with different firing schedules

· How to use texture within the glass piece

· Cold working techniques

· Things that can go wrong

 

Cost: £180 fully inclusive of all glass and supplies, use of tools, kiln, lunch and refreshments.

Fused Glass - pay as you go afternoon & evening classes

 

Many of you have already had a go at fused glass and would like an opportunity to develop your skills further without having to make a commitment to a full length course.  These pay as you go sessions allow you to expand your existing knowledge and work alongside other people who will have a different range of skills.  You will be taught new skills as well as having the opportunity to practice skills you already have.  You will also benefit from working with other students who have differing levels of skills and are likely to be working on a different technique to yourself.  NB These must be booked in advance.

 

Cost: £25 per session inclusive of all glass and supplies, use of tools, kiln and refreshments.

Fused Glass Taster Sessions

 

This is a two hour taster session to introduce you to the fun of fused glass.  You will be given an overview of the glass fusing process and then make a few of your own small pieces.  These will be fired and available for collection within a few days.  Typically you will make a small dish, a window hanger and a pendant.  No previous experience with glass is required.

 

Cost: £25 fully inclusive of all glass and supplies, use of tools, kiln and refreshments.

A Day with Mosaics

This is a one day course introducing you to the fun of working with mosaics.  You will work with glass mosaic tiles which you will learn to cut and then work with.  You will be introduced to the direct method of working with mosaics and will produce a finished piece by the end of the day.  You will make a panel of approx 30cm diameter which can be produced as a mosaic panel or a mirror with a mosaic border. 

 

Cost: £85 fully inclusive of all supplies, use of tools, lunch and refreshments.

NB Please note that for fused glass courses work will not be ready for you to take away with you.  I will contact you when the glass is ready for collection which depending on the course will typically be a few days.  If you are unable to collect the glass, it can be posted at a fee of £5 for work from a taster, afternoon or evening session, £10 for work from a 2 day course.  No guarantees can be made that the work will not break if being posted, but all effort will be made to wrap the pieces well enough to survive the postal service.

All courses are run from my workshop at my house in central Halifax with a maximum class size of 4.

 

Full day courses start at 9:30am and finish at 5pm.

Special Events

 

If you have a special requirement for a group of you to have a short taster or a team building day then get in touch and we can discuss what is feasible in terms of dates, prices and number of attendees.

Workshop and Kiln Hire

 

If you are interested in hiring working space in my workshop or using my kiln for working on your own fused glass work without the need for formal tuition, you can rent it by prior arrangement and subject to availability at the following prices:

 

1 day workshop hire—£35 per person

1/2 day workshop hire—£20 per person

 

Per fusing/slumping firing—£40

Per fusing & slumping firing—£60

 

My kiln has an internal dimension of 100cm x 50cm with 2 kiln shelves of 49.5cm x 49.5cm.

 

I also have a Paragon SC2 kiln which can be used at no extra cost when hiring space in the workshop.

 

For workshop hire, no more than 2 people will be booked in at the same time except in the case of a group booking where a larger group can book the space.
